Newguard - All Ages Events
| |
Generally we have not done "All Ages" projects since about 1996, because of the growth in
drug abuse by minors and a prohibition against drug and alcohol abuse at formal events
in our office and homes. Drinking and gaming, on and offline, do not go together - and
just make everyone else miserable (especially the GM or storyteller). It leads to trouble
and even arrests, which in 1998 essentially made running the wild fun-and-crazy hotel parties
roleplaying-game-fandom were famous for impossible.
In 2006 conventions began trying to make a comeback in Oklahoma, along with all-ages-shows
for concerts and movies. However, these shows frequently offered adult-only segments and
alcohol service, up to and including bars serving patrons amid "15 and up" music performances
in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This mix of alcohol, drugs, dark rooms, and sound - generally isn't a
solid model for a business. In fact, it fostered gang activity and gang recruiting.
So our Newguard - which was never affiliated with those events for obvious reason - was
formed to help provide the guidance and service, community, and non-faith-based (agnostic,
tolerant, culturally diverse) organization for younger persons affiliated with our members
to join us. Movie premieres, like "How to Train Your Dragon", "Avatar", and "The Wolfman"
at the high-end Warren Theater, are a perfect example of Newguard events in the past year (2010).
Upcoming Events:
- Introduction to Warhammer 40,000
- Classic Battletech / Epic-scale Space Marine (adeptus titanicus)
- Miniature Painting (Warhammer / WH40K / Battletech) - once/month
Children of members are included automatically as part of the fee structure, up to 17 years
of age. All events are subject to approval by parent or guardian. Some events, like horror
movies and shows which may contain violence or mature themes, require accompaniment by a parent
or guardian - as required by law. This includes the spouse, designated custodian, or family
member the club member designates for this role, so they may attend other simultaneous events.
Generally, age is relative to maturity - with the ability to sit and listen, communicate, and
remain engaged for 2-4 hours a must. As a result, we recommend ages 15 and up for these events
as a minimum, and even so require supervision or release to be signed for attendance. We strive
not to be a "daycare trip" environment, so please - limit small children and understand sound and
public spaces are not healthy for young children despite no fixed age limits.
